Exploring Northern New Mexico - Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos
December 2009Our Third Stop: Taos—The Soul of the Southwest Adobe Structures at Taos Pueblo Larger
Just an hour's drive north of Santa Fe—but what seems a world away—is Taos, well-known for the Taos Ski Valley, one of the nation's top ski and snowboard areas. But it is the eclectic mix of history, cultures, creative arts, many recreational activities, and a unique blending of naturopathic healing arts and traditional western medicine that provides Taos an almost mystical sense of harmony. Taos' rich history of Indian, Spanish, and Anglo settlement is evident in the ancient heritage of Taos Pueblo; the Spanish-influenced central plaza and outlying streets; and the wide spectrum of creative arts observed in the many museums, galleries, and studios.
Of Ancient Heritage and Traditional Values
A good way to begin a look into Taos' rich history is with a self-guided walking tour of some historic Taos landmarks. A tour booklet titled "Historic Taos—A Self-Guided Walking Tour" is available at any of the three sponsors, The Historic Taos Inn, The El Monte Sagrado, and LDG Architects, as well as the Taos Town Hall. This tour is a good introduction to the Taos Historic District, the historic plaza, and many of the sites that are significant in Taos' rich history.

Taos, New Mexico
July 2009
Remote and resplendent Taos, a diminutive town of about 6,500 nestled beneath New Mexico's highest peaks, has long been a haven for artists, bohemians and free spirits. The percentage of gays and lesbians in the population is likely far less than Santa Fe or Albuquerque, but Taos nevertheless pulls in a considerable number of GLBT visitors.

Taos, New Mexico
May 2009
Taos is in the northern New Mexico mountains, a two-and-a-half hour drive from Albuquerque and five hours from Denver. Wedged between a 13,000-foot-high mountain range and a 700-foot-deep gorge, it’s a place where jeans are worn at five-star restaurants. Maybe because of the famous artists and writers who made their home here (D.H. Lawrence, Ansel Adams, Georgia O’Keeffe), or maybe because of the Pueblo, it’s a spiritual place where travelers say they feel the special energy of the earth.

Culture & Travel: Autumn Glory
By Jill Fergus
Oprah print and online "O Magazine", September 2008
For some, it's a beloved fall ritual: a drive through the countryside to ooh and aah over the changing foliage. For others, staring at leaves is about as exciting as watching dew dry. Wherever you are on the spectrum, these four weekend destinations offer enough local color to keep everyone stimulated...Destination Three: Taos, New Mexico -- Luminaries from Georgia O'Keeffe to D.H. Lawrence have been attracted to Taos, which sits in the shadow of the Sangre de Cristo mountains and is home to striking adobe architecture and an abundance of galleries....See the complete Taos piece, including photos, at O Magazine.

Into the Wild: Horseback Safaris and Other Animal Adventures
by Ted Botha
National Post, July 8, 2008
When Mark Twain traveled by donkey through Spain, it was 1878. And despite myriad innovations in transportation since then, author Tim Moore did it more than 125 years later. Why? Just take a look at his book: "One Man and His Ass on a Pilgrimage to Santiago." In a world where it's child's play to reach any destination with a passport and plane ticket, donkeys and other beasts of burden can still carry us where
mechanized vehicles fail to reach...in the Western Hemisphere, a different breed of beast is employed for uphill treks. Wild Earth Llama Adventures leaves out of Taos, N.M., for a day or longer in the Rocky Mountains....see complete article at NationalPost.com.

#7...you can bring a sommelier and RAFT In STYLE
The classic three-day raft trip between El Vado and Abiquiu on the airbrushed Chama River (think multicolored sandstone canyons, old-growth ponderosa stands, and meadows blazing with purple asters) hardly needs an infomercial-style bonus offer. But act now and Taos-based Los Rios River Runners will arrange for an astronomer, archaeologist, gourmet chef, sommelier, local-lore storyteller, yoga instructor, or -- new for 2008 -- herbalist to accompany its guests... --Read full story at NationoalGeographicAdventure.com

Head for a mountain hideaway
There's no better excuse for playing hooky than the Bavarian Lodge and Restaurant, a European-style chalet secluded in the spruces. The four airy suites ooze Old World alpine elegance, with hand-painted murals, four-poster beds, and great views. Downstairs, the restaurant ($$$) serves gourmet Wienerschnitzel. Fresh powder outside your door pretty much guarantees you won't make that morning meeting. INFO: From $300, including breakfast; 505/776-8020. –Katie Arnold -- Read full article at sunset.com

Find the Real New Mexico
by Matthew Jaffe
October 2007
There was an autumn 10 years ago when I was ready to move to Taos. I had made friends here and fallen hard for hikes in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains by day and raucous conversations over margaritas by night in Taos's de facto living room, the Adobe Bar...
Now I'm back in another fall, this time with my wife, Becky, and all the old sensations of Taos come alive again. The cottonwoods are aglow, clad in October gold. Their leaves shimmy in the breeze, fluttering to the ground where they tumble down the street and crunch underfoot.
Lured by the promising twilight, we head to San Francisco de Asis Church, an 18th-century structure that, thanks to Ansel Adams and Georgia O'Keeffe, became a modern art icon... — Read full story at sunset.com or at Sunset Magazine archive.
